What Ingredients Are In Beer Bread?
This is one of the easiest homemade breads you’ll ever make. There are only 5 ingredients in beer bread:
3 cups self-rising flour (see below to make self-rising flour from all-purpose flour if necessary)
1 teaspoon salt
4 Tablespoons sugar
12-ounce beer
Truly it’s a mix / pour / bake bread that turns out moist & delicious every time!
What If You Only Have All-Purpose Flour?
If you only have all-purpose flour you can make self-rising flour by adding baking powder and salt.
For EACH CUP of all-purpose flour:
So for the Three Cups of self-rising flour in this recipe you’ll substitute:
3 Cups All-Purpose Flour
¾ teaspoon Salt (in addition to the salt called for in the recipe)
4½ teaspoons Baking Powder
What Beer Works Best For Beer Bread?
The style of beer you use for your bread will affect your bread’s flavor. But each is appropriate depending upon the result you’re after.
- Dark Style Beers such bocks, stouts & porter styles impart a more robust flavor to beer bread. This works best when you’re baking your bread without additional flavors/herbs added and want the beer flavors to shine through.
- Lighter Style Beers such as lager, pilsner & ale beers have less flavor impact to your bread and work well where you’re adding additional flavors you want to emphasize such as pesto, rosemary or other flavors.
Does Beer Bread Batter Have To Rise?
Beer bread doesn’t require kneading or rising. It’s a quick bread that uses beer for the liquid requirement as well as the yeast.
For the basic recipe I want the flavor of the beer to shine through! But I typically use whatever I’ve got. Even with a lighter-flavored commercial beer this bread is delicious.
How To Make Simple Beer Bread
Here’s the quick read of my basic beer bread procedure:
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl
Stir in one 12-oz bottle of beer
Pour batter into a greased loaf pan
Bake 45-55 minutes until crust is nicely browned
Ta-Daaaaaa! Now wasn’t that easy??
BAKER’S NOTE: Don’t forget the basic rule of making bread – never just scoop the flour into the measuring cup.
Instead use a spoon to fill your measuring cup, then use the back of a knife across the top of the measuring cup to scrape off the excess.
This will assure you are measuring the correct amount of flour.
I like to add a touch of melted bacon grease, olive oil or butter to the top of the loaf about 10 minutes before it comes out of the oven. That step makes the crust less crunchy and the bread moist and more flavorful.
RancherMan & I prefer it this way but of course you could skip this step for a crustier crust.
How To Flavor Plain Beer Bread
I make regular beer bread all the time. But sometimes I want it flavored.
Often I’ll had a couple of handfuls of shredded cheddar cheese and a minced jalapeno for cheesy-jalapeno bread.
Sometimes I make a Pesto Dried-Tomato Flavored Bread using homemade basil pesto, sun-dried tomatoes & topped with olive oil.
Other times I’ll chop fresh rosemary from the garden & add cheddar cheese for a delicious Rosemary/Cheddar-Flavored Bread.
I’ve even added brown sugar and chopped cinnamon-spiced apples for a desserty kind of apple cinnamon bread.
It’s all delicious!
Beer Bread Is A Quick Homemade Bread Option
I love to whip up a quick loaf of beer bread to enjoy with our supper. Heck I’ll often bake two loaves at a time – sometimes in two different flavors!
It’s just as easy to whip up two loaves as to bake only one. I mean, they both cook in the oven at the same time using the same electricity so why not??
Truth be told, I’ve even made a couple of loaves when we didn’t have homemade Sandwich Bread to spread our homemade Egg Salad upon. It’s so much faster than traditional bread recipes.
What’s not to love about this recipe? I mean c’mon, no kneading, no rising – just mix & bake? Yes please!
The bread is hefty, yet soft & moist. And the taste?? DELICIOUS!
